UNU-INWEH Launches New UN Report at Event
On March 10, 2015, the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), located at McMaster Innovation Park, held a special Another Drop Seminar which featured the launch of a new UN Report, Putting Water and Energy at the Heart of Sustainable Development, as well as the inauguration of renowned water expert, Robert Sandford, as the EPCOR Water Security Research Chair at UNU.
Funded by EPCOR Utilities Inc., a provider of water and electricity services to over one million North Americans, the position will enable Sandford to lead in a four-year effort to define how people around the world can better manage water resources for the future.
Says Mr. Sandford: “My goal as EPCOR Water Security Research Chair at UNU is to translate the widest range of scientific research on water security into language the public can readily understand and that both public and private sector decision-makers can use to craft timely and durable policy.”
The inauguration coincided with the launch of a new UN report, Putting Water and Energy at the Heart of Sustainable Development, which details linkages between water and energy and underlines the need to place those twin resources at the heart of sustainable development policy-making.
Says the report: “Water for energy; energy for water — as independent sectors and through their inextricable linkages, water and energy are key drivers of economic growth and social development. Benefits include poverty reduction, improvements in health and education, and a reduction in inequalities. Together, water and energy can promote stable societies and human dignity as well as realize basic human rights.”
The event drew a full house, attracting McMaster academics, Hamilton-based water professionals, and the general public. Participants were given to opportunity to participate in the official 2015 World Water Day campaign through #WaterIs self-portraits that described what water meant to them. Official World Water Day celebrations will kick off on March 23rd.
