McMaster Innovation Park Appoints Dr. Gailene Tobin Vandenheuvel as New CEO
Leadership transition marks a new chapter in MIP’s evolution as a premier hub for innovation and commercialization
The Board of Directors of McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gailene Tobin Vandenheuvel as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective July 14, 2025.
With more than 30 years of experience across academia, industry, and government, Dr. Tobin Vandenheuvel is a recognized leader in research commercialization, innovation park management, and cross-sector collaboration. She most recently served as Executive Director of Western Research Parks, where she led strategic expansion, built strong tenant networks, and positioned the park as a national leader in research-driven economic development.
“Gailene brings a rare combination of scientific expertise, entrepreneurial mindset, and strategic leadership,” said Andy Knights, Chair of the MIP Board of Directors. “Her appointment marks a new chapter for MIP — one focused on deeper collaboration, stronger partnerships, and long-term sustainability.”
Dr. Tobin Vandenheuvel holds a PhD in Immunology and has published in the fields of cancer biology, immunology, and natural health sciences. In addition to her academic background, she has held senior roles in both the public and private sectors, with a focus on innovation ecosystems, real estate strategy, and stakeholder engagement.
“I’m honoured to join McMaster Innovation Park at such a pivotal time,” said Dr. Tobin Vandenheuvel. “MIP is uniquely positioned to connect cutting-edge research with industry, startups, and investment. I look forward to working with our partners, tenants, and the broader innovation community to help MIP realize its full potential.”
MIP is one of Canada’s premier research and innovation parks, home to a growing roster of startups, scale-ups, and established companies across sectors such as life sciences, advanced manufacturing, and clean technology. MIP also houses Innovation Factory, The Forge business incubator, and serves as a critical bridge between research institutions, including McMaster University, and industry.
Gailene’s appointment follows a strategic review of MIP’s operations, governance, and growth strategy. The Board undertook a national search to identify a leader who could guide MIP’s next phase and ensure alignment with McMaster’s research and innovation priorities while maintaining operational independence and financial sustainability.
“This is a moment of renewal,” added Knights. “We are confident that under Gailene’s leadership, MIP will continue to grow as a high-impact innovation space — rooted in partnership, focused on outcomes, and ready to lead.”
Dr. Tobin Vandenheuvel will begin in her new role in mid-July and will spend her first weeks engaging with MIP staff, tenants, community partners, and government stakeholders.
