National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

Today marks the observance of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a public commemoration of the history of residential schools; a day that honours the lives of the lost children and to reflect on the tragic impact of the residential schools, its survivors and the entire indigenous community.

The road ahead for full reconciliation requires a collective effort. We can each play our part by first committing to learning more about the true impact of the residential schools and participate in the on-going provincial activities dedicated to honouring and supporting the community.

To commemorate today you can:

·      Wear orange as part of Orange Shirt Day and join the commemoration ceremony organized by the McMaster University Indigenous Studies Program, Indigenous research Institute, Indigenous Student Services, and Indigenous Health Learning Lodge

·      Connect to on-going educational virtual programming

·      Tune in to the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Broadcast

This tragic history continues to form part of the legacy of the Indigenous community and by acknowledging this hard truth, we can become champions for change, healing and reconciliation.

Together, we can heal.
